CIMB,RHB
STANDARD CHARTERED

German assignment

Germany Tour – The Berlin Part, Day 1
Prepared by Sheau Yueh, Chan

Recommendation: Berlin Pass is available at 69 euros, providing free entrance to more than 50 attractions including a comprehensive Berlin guidebook, 1 day tour on open top tour bus, 1 travel card providing free travel on public transport, 1 hour river cruise and massive discount at participating merchants. Berlin Pass is recommended for self guided tour in Berlin.

Day 1: Depart Hamburg at 8am by train; the whole journey to Berlin would take approximately 2 hours. Upon arrival at Berlin Hauptbahnhof (also known as Berlin HBF), take Bus 245 (direction S Nordbahnhof) until bus stop "Naturkundemuseum". Turn left to Chausseestrasse and BaxPax Mitte Hostel is located just 100 metres away on the left hand side of the street.

                        Addrress: Chausseestrasse 102, 10115 Berlin-Mitte, Berlin, Germany

As it is still early in the morning, left your luggage with the reception and start exploring the exciting city of Berlin. Since Berlin terrain is mostly flat, biking is one of the best way to see Berlin. Instead of sitting in a crowded tour bus for hours, rent a bike and start your own customised Berlin sightseeing trip, and the good news is, you could easily rent a bike from BaxPax Mitte Hostel.

The first stop, king of all Berlin’s attraction, The Brandenburg Gate. The Brandenburger Gate is situated at the end of Unter den Linden, a grand boulevard in Berlin. It was originally part of a wall surrounding Berlin and was the main entrance to the city. It is the only gate that remains of this former city wall.
The second stop, Reichstag, the Bundestag seat of German Parliament; is one of Berlin's most historical landmarks. It is in located in close proximity to the Brandenburg Gate and there is an elevator to bring visitors to the building’s roof where the spiral walkway leading to the top of the glass dome is located. Nice view of the Berlin city is expected in sunny day.
The third stop, Holocaust Memorial. In May 2005, on the 60th anniversary of the fall of the Nazi regime and the end of World War II, the city of Berlin dedicated their Holocaust Memorial, designed to commemorate the murder of six million Jews at the hands of Hitler and his forces. Holocaust Memorial is made up of 2,711 gray stone slabs that bear no markings, such as names or dates.
The fourth stop, Checkpoint Charlie. By 1962, this checkpoint was the only place at which foreigners visiting Berlin could cross from West to East and back again. Today, a line of bricks traces the path where the Berlin Wall once stood and visitors will find a replica of the Checkpoint Charlie booth and sign at the original site. The original booth is in the Allied Museum in Zehlendorf.
After visiting Checkpoint Charlie, back to Unter den Linden, a main east-west thoroughfare through the city of Berlin, earned its name from the rows of linden trees that were first planted there more than three-and-a-half centuries ago. Today, you'll still find a number of wonderful architectural sites along Unter den Linden including the expansive Humboldt University, the Staatsoper, Altes Palais, and the Palace Bridge at the far eastern end.
Fifth stop, the Palace Bridge was built in the early 1800s and led to the palace that was located on Museum Island. It is considered the most beautiful out of the numerous bridges in Berlin. While the Palace Bridge itself is certainly attractive, it is the artwork that accompanies the bridge that receives the most attention. They show the development of a hero from early youth to manhood, and then to death on the battlefield and the taking of his body to Olympus.
Sixth stop, the Berliner Dom is a baroque Cathedral built between 1894 and 1905. It is located on an island in the river Spree, also known as the Museum Island. The current building is the third church built at this location.
After visiting the Berliner Dom, enjoy one hour of  relaxing cruise along the River Spree and take in some of the Berlin’s most iconic buildings and monuments. From the river cruise,  you can experience the best of old and new Berlin.
The seventh stop, Berliner Fernsehturm is a television tower which rises to a height of more than 360 meters from its futuristic looking base at the southwest side of Alexanderplatz. The tower is the tallest structure in Berlin and can be seen from almost anywhere in the city.
After a whole day of sightseeing, drop by Aufsturz Bar at Oranienburg Street for a relaxing evening before heading back to BaxPax Mitte Hostel.

~~ END OF DAY 1 IN BERLIN ~~
